U.S. DOT's Hours-of-Service Final Rul...

The U.S. Department of Transportation has made revisions to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's (FMCSA) Hours-of-Service Final Rule safety requirements. They include:

the maximum number of hours a truck driver may work within a week was reduced by 12 hours (formerly up to 82 hours within a seven-day period, now 70 hours)
truck drivers may no longer drive after working eight hours without first taking a break of at least 30 minutes
the current 11-hour daily driving limit remains the same
additionally, truck drivers who maximize their weekly work hours must take at least two nights' rest when their 24-hour body clock requires sleep the most, which is from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.

Bruce Shindhelm, owner of Finger Lakes Wrecker Service, isn't waiting for someone else to get the word out about New York's expanded “Move Over” law, which covered tow truck operators as of Jan. 1.
 
His Ithaca, NY-based company ran a paid advertisement in the Ithaca Journal on Jan. 21. Shindhelm writes, “What good is a good law if no one knows about it?”

Our condolences to the family and acquaintances of Australian tow truck company owner Geoff Clark and 23-year-old Sarah Frazer. Clark was trying to tow Frazer's car from the side of the highway when they were hit and killed by a passing truck on Feb. 15. Here's the story from The Sydney Morning Herald:

Sad News From VA. Our condolences to the family and acquaintances of Dennis Cash, owner of Cash's Garage of Madison Heights. He died on Monday, 2/27/12, while working tow a vehicle from an accident. Another vehicle came through the crash scene and pinned him against his truck while his two sons watched. Here's the story from WDBJ7.com:
